Welcome to FILOVIR, the website dedicated to people interested in filovirus research that provides up to date scientific information about filoviruses - Ebola, Marburg and others belonging to the family Filoviridae.

Ebola virus disease: in numbers from 1976 to 2016.

On January 14th 2016, the World Health Organization declared ended the longest and widest Ebola outbreak in the natural history of the virus. Between December 2013 and December 2015 the viral disease hit Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone in West Africa, with travel-imported cases in Senegal, Mali, the United States and several countries in Europe. During the same period, Ebola had spread to Nigeria and an independent outbreak occurred in the Democratic Republic of the Congo too. Unfortunately, only few hours after the WHO declaration a new case was reported in Sierra Leone, and the outbreak is technically not over anymore.
DanielleSDuring the last two years, a daily coverage of the West African Ebola outbreak was posted on FILOVIR website and, to give a “one-shot” idea of its final toll, we asked the artist Danielle Stanton (photo) to realize an infographic with the numbers of this devastating event. In its final version the artwork illustrates the total amount of Ebola cases since the virus was discovered in 1976. We hope that it will serve as a memento for the dimension of a tragedy, in dedication of the extraordinary people who worked at the frontline to counter the spread of the disease and in memory of the thousands of victims the virus has claimed so far. Danielle Stanton is an artist and designer working out of the Boston/Cambridge area (MA, USA). She creates cut paper art and silver jewelry outside of work, and has had a long fascination with viruses and outbreaks.
